Beckhoff TwinCAT

PC-based automation software platform running on EtherCAT that handles PLC logic, motion control, and sometimes robot kinematics from a single controller.

TwinCAT runs as real-time software on standard industrial PC hardware, combining PLC logic, motion control, and in some configurations full robot kinematics under one software environment rather than splitting those functions across separate dedicated controllers. EtherCAT is its native fieldbus for connecting drives and I/O.

Because TwinCAT can directly control servo axes with EtherCAT-based motion, some machine builders use it to run gantry robots or custom kinematic mechanisms rather than buying a traditional robot controller, particularly for high-speed pick-and-place applications.

For cells with a standard 6-axis robot from FANUC, ABB, or similar, TwinCAT more commonly acts as the surrounding cell controller, coordinating the robot over EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, or PROFINET rather than replacing the robot's own controller.
