Ethernet Global Data

GE/Emerson PACSystems producer-consumer protocol used to exchange I/O data between robot controllers and GE-based PLCs over Ethernet.

Ethernet Global Data, usually shortened to EGD, moves data using a producer-consumer model where a device broadcasts a data exchange at a fixed interval and any subscriber on the network can consume it. It shows up mainly on plants standardized on GE Fanuc or Emerson PACSystems controllers.

Robot controllers that support EGD map internal registers into exchanges that the PLC picks up on a scheduled basis, similar in spirit to implicit I/O on EtherNet/IP but with GE's own configuration tools.

EGD installations are increasingly legacy, since Emerson's newer PACSystems platforms lean on EtherNet/IP and OPC UA for new integrations.
