Robotics in Manufacturing

Application

Glass Handling

Glass handling robots move large, fragile glass sheets or formed panels between processing stations without chipping edges or breaking the material.

The robot lifts a glass sheet with a vacuum cup array sized to the panel's dimensions, distributing suction across enough points to support the sheet without concentrated stress at any one location.

Acceleration and deceleration profiles are kept gentle compared to metal handling, since sudden motion changes can crack or shatter a large glass panel that would otherwise handle a similar load fine.

Breakage detection, whether through vacuum sensing or vision, lets the cell stop quickly if a panel cracks mid-transfer rather than continuing the cycle and scattering glass further.

Common questions

What robots are used for Glass Handling?
Glass Handling suits 6-axis industrial, palletizing robots. Examples include ABB IRB 460.
What payload and reach does Glass Handling need?
Payload is typically 10 to 300 kg with reach around 1500 to 3000 mm.
What matters most for Glass Handling?
Vacuum cup array gripper. Gentle acceleration and deceleration profiles. Breakage detection. Flexible mounting for large sheet sizes.
