Sorting robots divert items to different destinations based on type, size, or quality, typically working at high speed on a moving conveyor.
A vision or sensor system classifies each item as it approaches, and the robot picks it off the line and places it into the correct output bin or lane before the next item arrives.
Throughput is the main design driver, so sorting cells often use delta or SCARA robots that can complete a pick-and-place cycle in a fraction of a second.
Diverting logic has to keep up with variable mix ratios, since a batch that is mostly one category still needs the robot to catch every exception item without missing a cycle.
