In 2023, 391 workers died from injuries on the job in US manufacturing. The total across US industry was 5,283, at a rate of 3.5 deaths per 100,000 full-time workers.
These come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, the official US count. The census records how each worker died: transportation incidents, falls, contact with objects and equipment, violence. It does not break out a robot category, so none of these figures is a robot-death count.
That distinction matters because robot-safety writing sometimes reaches for a big manufacturing fatality number to imply robots are killing people. This page traces the real figures and keeps them separate from the robot-incident record.

Why the numbers disagree
The main confusion is scope. The 5,283 figure is the whole US economy; 391 is manufacturing alone. Quote one where the other belongs and the story is off by an order of magnitude.
Count versus rate is the other trap. The count (5,283) fell 3.7% from 2022, and the rate (3.5 per 100,000) also dropped. A count can rise while a rate falls if employment grows, so name which one you mean.
None of these is a robot figure. CFOI codes the event and source of each death, but it does not publish a standalone robot category, so a robot-specific claim has to come from case-level records, not this release.
How to cite these figures
Cite it as BLS CFOI data: 5,283 US fatal work injuries in 2023, with 391 in manufacturing, at a rate of 3.5 per 100,000 full-time workers.
Say 'manufacturing' when you mean 391 and 'the US total' when you mean 5,283. The two are an order of magnitude apart.

Where people go wrong
