Why the numbers disagree

The Americas and the United States are two different lines in the same paragraph. IFR reports 50,100 installations for the Americas, down 10%, and 34,200 for the US, down 9%, with the US at 68% of the region. Quote 50,100 as a country figure and you overstate the US by nearly 16,000 robots and attach the wrong decline to it.

IFR and A3 count different things. IFR measures robots installed and put into service in a year; A3, the Association for Advancing Automation, reports orders booked by its member companies in units and dollars. An order placed one quarter can be commissioned the next, so the two series will not line up even when both are correct.

Coverage differs three ways. A3's figures reflect its membership across North America, IFR's 34,200 is a single country total, and IFR's Americas region is wider than North America. Each answers a different question, so a chart that mixes them shows phantom gaps.

Annual flow versus the installed base. 34,200 is one year of new robots, while the US operational stock, the running total still on factory floors, is far larger. Describe the country's automation with the installation figure and you understate the fleet by a wide margin, since the stock accumulates year after year.
