Structured-light 3D scanning

3D imaging technique that projects a known light pattern onto a part to calculate depth and shape, used for guidance and dimensional inspection.

Structured-light systems project a series of striped or coded light patterns onto a part and use the pattern's distortion, captured by one or more cameras, to calculate a dense 3D point cloud. This gives higher resolution than time-of-flight sensors, suiting precise guidance and dimensional inspection tasks.

The technique is sensitive to ambient light and highly reflective or transparent surfaces, since both can wash out or distort the projected pattern. Enclosed or shaded work areas generally produce more consistent results.
