How many manufacturers use robots? Canada 8.4%, UK 14%, EU 16%
8.4% of Canadian manufacturers use robots. In the UK the figure is 14%, and across the EU it is 16%. Three national statistics agencies, three answers to what sounds like one question.
None of them is wrong. They surveyed different years, drew the firm-size cutoff in different places, and counted slightly different technologies. That is the whole reason a single worldwide manufacturer adoption rate does not exist, and why the ones quoted online usually cite nothing.
This page puts the three national surveys side by side, with the firm-size gradient each one found, so the figures can be compared honestly rather than averaged into a number nobody measured.

The figures and where they come from
Each figure is rated for how safely you can cite it today. Ratings judge current usability, not whether a number was ever correct.

Why the numbers disagree
The three headline figures differ mostly because of when they were measured. The EU number is from 2018, Canada's from 2022, and the UK's from 2023. Robot adoption rose over that period, so the oldest survey producing the highest figure is a signal that something other than time is also at work.
That something is definitions. The EU survey counts enterprises employing at least 10 persons and includes service robots alongside industrial ones. The Canadian survey covers a specific set of industries under its Survey of Advanced Technology. The UK survey asks about robotics among a basket of five technologies. Each is internally consistent and none is directly comparable to the others.
What does replicate, independently, in every survey is the firm-size gradient. Canada runs 1.6% for small firms to 9.1% for large; the UK runs 3% for firms of 10 to 19 employees to 16% for firms of 250 or more. Two agencies, different countries, different instruments, same shape. That is the finding worth carrying: robot adoption is a large-firm phenomenon almost everywhere it is measured.
How to cite these figures
Quote one country's figure with its year and its agency, not an average of the three. There is no defensible way to average surveys that count different populations.
If you need the general claim, use the size gradient rather than a level: robot adoption rises steeply with firm size in every national survey that measures it, roughly fivefold from the smallest firms to the largest.
Separate the manufacturing figure from the economy-wide one. Canada is 8.4% among manufacturers but 2.0% across all covered industries, and the two get quoted interchangeably.
Treat the EU figure as dated. It is a 2018 reference year, and the newer EU data is not published in a form that can be verified.
Where people go wrong
Averaging the three into a single world adoption rate. They measure different populations in different years; the average would be a number no agency ever produced.
Quoting the EU 16% as current. Its reference year is 2018, the oldest of the three.
Mixing the economy-wide and manufacturing figures. Canada's 2.0% and 8.4% are both correct and describe different denominators.
Reading these as robot density. Density counts robots per worker; these count the share of firms that use any robots at all. A country can have high density and a low share of firms if adoption is concentrated in a few large plants.
How we checked
Each figure comes from the national statistics agency that produced it: Statistics Canada, the UK Office for National Statistics, and Eurostat. We retrieved all three publications and confirmed every figure appears in their text.
We deliberately present them side by side without harmonising them. Adjusting three surveys onto a common definition would require assumptions none of the agencies made, and the resulting number would be ours rather than theirs.
Where the surveys agree, we say so and treat it as the stronger finding. The firm-size gradient replicating across independent instruments is better evidence than any single headline rate.
We looked for a current EU refresh and for a comparable US firm-level manufacturing figure. The EU update sits in an interactive database we cannot verify against, and the US equivalent is covered separately on this site from Census data. Where a figure could not be verified in a fetchable source, it is not on this page.

Common questions
- What percentage of manufacturers use robots?
- It depends which country and which survey. Statistics Canada found 8.4% of manufacturers in 2022, the UK ONS found 14% in 2023, and Eurostat found 16% across the EU in 2018. The surveys count different populations, so there is no single global figure.
- Why do the three numbers disagree?
- Different reference years, different firm-size cutoffs, and different definitions of what counts as robotics. The EU figure includes service robots and covers firms with 10 or more employees; the Canadian and UK surveys are built differently again.
- What do all the surveys agree on?
- The firm-size gradient. Adoption rises steeply with company size everywhere it is measured, from 1.6% to 9.1% in Canada and from 3% to 16% in the UK. That replication across independent surveys makes it the most reliable finding here.
- Is this the same as robot density?
- No. Density measures robots per 10,000 workers. These figures measure the share of firms using any robots at all. A country can rank high on density while most of its firms own none, because the robots concentrate in a few large plants.

The story is that everyone is automating. The US Census Bureau's own firm survey found only about 2% of US firms use robotics. A newer Census release puts it far higher. The gap is the whole story.
