Memory Card (CompactFlash)

Stores the controller's system software image on a removable flash card for easy backup and recovery.

The CompactFlash memory card holds the controller's system software image on many controller generations, mounted in a card slot on the main CPU board rather than being soldered permanently in place.

Because the card is removable, technicians can prepare a spare card with a known-good software image for rapid recovery, or pull the card to read or restore its contents on a bench system rather than working on the live controller.

Card slot connector wear and the finite write-cycle life of flash memory are the two most common reasons a card degrades over years of service, usually showing up as file corruption or read errors.
