The surge suppressor clamps transient voltage spikes, caused by lightning, nearby equipment switching, or utility grid events, before that energy can reach the sensitive electronics inside the controller.
These devices sacrifice themselves gradually to repeated smaller surges, so a suppressor that has absorbed several events over its life offers less protection than a new one even without an obvious failure.
Facilities with older electrical infrastructure or equipment known to generate switching transients typically see more frequent surge suppressor replacement as part of routine preventive maintenance.
